Sometimes even writers run out of time. One example is Lord Byron’s piece, Don Juan, which he was not able to finish before he died sadly. The mock epic was to be a great piece in the end, but it came to a sudden stop. This was unintentional and very unfortunate. Other writers just decide to end things in an abrupt or unexpected way. Often when writers do this it’s not because they ran out of time as it appears, but rather because they want to relay their message in a surprising manor. Of Graham Greene’s A Shocking Accident and D. H. Lawrence’s The Rocking-Horse Winner, Lawrence’s story has the more surprising ending for three reasons: 1) the boy’s death came very suddenly, 2) mother’s reaction was quite unexpected, 3) uncle’s greedy response changes how one sees wealth. To begin, Paul’s death came very suddenly, whereas Jerome’s fiancà ©Ã¢â‚¬â„¢s response could have been predicted. The plots are held up by a firm backbone of imagery and clever literary techniques. They are more than just a beginning middle and end, the whole plot is linked together with predictions and coincidences and it all unravels throughout like a ball of wool. One prime example of this is Romeo and Juliet. From the start of the play, in the prologue, Shakespeare uses language and imagery to build up the expectation that Romeo and Juliets love is doomed. Uncommonly, the play begins with telling us that the main characters are going to fall in love and kill themselves. We know this because it says, the fearful passage of their death markd love and a pair of star-crossd lovers take their life. This is an important image as people in the time of Shakespeare were superstitious and believed in astrology. And beginning with saying they were star-crossed meaning that their love was intertwined with their doom and it said so in the stars, is particularly poignant for those times. This is also a link to when Romeo finds out of Juliets supposed death and cries out then I defy you, stars! With this exclamation, Romeo is saying that he defies destiny. This image makes the play somewhat cyclic, with it beginning with saying that it is destined for them to die and ending with Romeo defying his destin y, to lose Juliet and at the same time by taking his own life fulfilling it. In Romeos speech about his grief over Rosaline, he says, love is a smoke made with a fume of sighs. This is a metaphor and could be saying that love, like smoke, is confusing, clouds your judgement, chokes you and could sometimes kill you and it is caused by the first sighs of falling in love. Although Romeo is referring to Rosaline this relates to the nature of his and Juliets love which, of course ultimately results in their death. In this same speech Romeo says that love is also a choking gall, and a preserving sweet. This is a paradox and he is saying that though love is healing and sweet it can also be a poison. As well as being a prediction of the fact that it is love that kills both him and Juliet in the end but also the point is taken further by the details that it is a mixture that Juliet uses to fake her death and a poison that Romeo uses to kill himself with in the tomb. When Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time Shakespeare cleverly uses imagery and the idea of new love ironically as the audience knows that they are both doomed to die for their love of one another. In the scene where they meet Shakespeare put a lot of religious imagery into use. Religion suggests church and holy ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. This is a tie in with the fact that Romeo and Juliet get married and that there are deaths in the play. Some examples of this are this holy shrine, gentle sin, for prayers sake. The religion of that time was Christian and Romeo and Juliet would have been Catholic. The idea of the Christian religion is that of love and how Jesus died for the love of his father and of his people. In doing this he brought people of different backgrounds and opinions together in one firm belief. In a way this is a subtle prediction of how Romeo and Juliet die in the name of love and reunite the long opposed houses of Montague and Capulet. Friar Lawrence is a holy man which is a link to the religious imagery, and he is also an expert in herbs and their uses in potions and mixtures. This is a link with how Juliet uses a potion to fake her death and it is this which causes Romeo, on seeing her dead, to kill himself, also with a poisonous mixture. In act two scene six, where Romeo and Juliet go to Friar Lawrence to be wed, William Shakespeare uses the character of the Friar as a tool to portray to the audience, through imagery, that their love will end in tragedy. He says these violent delights have violent ends. Here the word violent has two meanings, when used alongside delights it implies that the delight and love is fierce and strong, using its emotional meaning. Whereas when it is used with ends it gives the impressions of aggression, murder and death. This is a paradox and therefore a prediction that although Romeo and Juliets love is strong their death will be inevitable. Romeo also says but come what sorrow can me aning that he will marry Juliet and love her, whatever happens to them. To the audience this is dramatic irony as we know that great sorrow will befall them both and bring sorrow to both their houses. Another of example of imagery being used in Friar Lawrences speeches is just before this. He says that poison hath residence, and medicine power meaning that in one flower both healing powers and powers to kill lie side by side which links to a major theme in the play, that love and death walk hand in hand. Friar Lawrence says Now ere the sun advance his burning eye, the day to cheer, this could be a link to when Romeo says it is the east, and Juliet is the sun and by saying that the sun brightens up the day reflects how the love of Romeo for Juliet brightens up his life. This is ironic as Juliet is also the reason Romeo commits suicide. This is another example of Imagery being used to build up the expectation that Romeo and Juliet are doomed to die for love. Again the point is stressed that in their case, love and death walk hand in hand, inseparably. When Romeo and Juliet spend their first night together, they also spend their last. As Romeo is leaving and Juliet is trying to persuade him to stay, he says to her, expressing his happiness after spending the night with her, let me be put to death, I am content, so thou wilt have it so He is saying that now he has spent one night with her he doesnt care if he is caught and dies for Juliets sake, it is his love for her that makes him say this. In the same way he says, Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so. Both of these are predictions that Romeo will indeed die for Juliet. Also when Juliet says window, let day in, and let life out this is also a prediction that though the day is dawning now when the day is over, so will be their lives. Also when she says be fickle, Fortune: For then I hope thou wilt not keep him long, but send him back. This is dramatic irony as the audience know from the prologue and the other predictions so far throughout the play, that Romeos fate is to di e, and Juliet will never see him again after this moment. There are more predictions and ironies in the speech by Juliet when she is taking the poison that will fake her own death. One irony is when she says how if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time when Romeo come to redeem me? This is ironic as she actually awakes from her death like sleep too late and Romeo has already come and killed himself as he thinks she is dead. Also she says dash out my desprate brains this is another dramatic irony and a prediction as she does in fact kill herself. The fact that she is taking a potion is in itself ironic as that is what Romeo uses to kill himself. This ties in with the imagery at the beginning, mentioned before. The fact that Juliets speech is full of negative imagery, for example: loathsome smells, all these hideous fears, pluck the mangld Tybalt from his shroud, the terror of the place, And shrieks like mandrakes torn out of the earth, All predict that the ending of the play is going to be also negative. When the news of Juliets apparent death reaches Romeo there is more imagery to predict his and his lovers doom. He says, referring to Juliet, For nothing can be ill if she is well this is ironic as she appears to be entirely the opposite of well, therefore Romeo is wrong. However she is well and Romeo just does not realise it and goes ahead and kills himself anyway. Another prediction is when Romeo says well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight. As on that night they will both indeed lie together, dead in the tomb. As Romeo is talking to Balthasar about leaving him alone after he enters the tomb he says I descend into this bed of death. In one respect this simply refers to the tomb being a place where dead bodies are laid. On the other hand it could mean that Romeo descends to his own death bed, this, therefore, is a prediction that Romeo is going to kill himself. As he enters the tomb, he expresses his hatred of it as it is the place where his lover lies, assumed dead. In a way he is also expressing his hatred of death. Friendship among adolescents fulfils important tasks, such as providing much of the social context that allows proper performance of actions which will be accepted and rewarded by the peer group, strengthening the self and reaffirming its worth and value. Adolescents use the peer group to express their divided feelings and incoherent images in accordance with their emotional needs and to reinforce their behaviour as they conform to peer norms and behaviour styles (Tatar, 1995). Adolescents perceive popularity and attainment of social status among peers as beneficial and positive, reflecting their desirability as a friend. Adolescents also form larger, more loosely organised groups called crowds. Unlike the more intimate clique, membership into the crowd is based on reputation and stereotype. Whereas the clique serves as the main context for direct interaction, the crowd grants the adolescent an identity within the larger social structure. Adolescents are very aware of the differential social status conferred upon different groups, and this knowledge can affect self-evaluation: categorisation of the self as a member of an unpopular or lower status group can be detrimental to feelings of self-worth and self-esteem (Denholm, Horniblow, and Smalley, 1992). Susceptibility to peer pressure is reported to peak between the ages of twelve to sixteen years (Tarrant, North, Edridge, Kirk, Smith, and Turner, 2001). Peer conformity is a complex process that varies with the adolescent’s age and need for social approval and with the situation. Adolescents reported that they felt greatest pressure to conform to the most obvious aspects of peer culture, such as, dressing and grooming like everyone else and participating in social activities. I think he could have, but as a viewer I know I would not have gotten the same effect that I did with just Jefferson Mays. His Acting was just phenomenal, he did an exceptional job. Mays instrument defiantly had to be his voice, he changed it so often, I even got a little confused at times. He spoke strongly, and made the audience believe that he was actually several different people. Sometimes even little gesture implied that he was acting as a different character. He was also very in touch with all of his characters making it even more believable that he was actually a different person. The overall theme was survival of Nazi Germany and Communism as a Transvestite. There were many hints that directly or indirectly pointed to this, such as the picture of Charlotte as a young boy with a lion on each side of him as if he were embracing them. The lights, the actual speaking interviews, as well as the talk show during the play all pointed to the survival of a transvestite in a hard time. I am not sure what Wrights thought behind this was but it would be interesting to find out. One thing that I enjoyed about this play was the fact that the scene was always in the backdrop and it really did not crowd up the stage, so my thoughts were more focused on Charlotte. Voice recognition was being experimented with by the government agencies for over six decades however, did not become reality in the public until the last two decades of the 20th century. This new technology allowed the user to enter comments or commands without keyboard functions or a mouse. This was truly hands free (Parente, Kock, Sonsini, 2004). The mid 1990s finally brought the induction of voice recognition into the health care industry. Many doctors feared the use of this new technology and others disbelieved the capabilities which prevented them from using the system. The vocabulary of the technology lacked the sophistication which would be required for its purpose. This program required the user to adapt to its capabilities instead of the program adapting to the user; this was backward to how the program would ideally work. Having a cold or an accent made the technology quite difficult to use. Computers were slower at processing information during this time in technological history; this made the problem worse. With the early version of voice recognition it was sometimes hard to tell the difference â€Å"between background noise and the user’s speech† and the technology was much less than cost effective. The system generally started at â€Å"$27,000 per workstation† (Parente et al. , 2004, Historical Development of Speech-Recognition Technology, para 6). The voice recognition system would be improved upon and become an important part of the technology used in hospitals today. A wider understanding of medical vocabulary would be important for doctors to hold any faith in the system. Improvements were indeed made over time. †Accuracy rates rose dramatically, and doctors were no longer struggling for the right words for the system to understand and record. Newer systems even provided each user with an opportunity to teach the computer to understand† the way that he or she speaks (Parente et al. , 2004, Historical Development of Speech-Recognition Technology, para 7). According to Business Source (2006), many hospitals are now using voice recognition technology with ease and finding the system quite dependable. Though expensive, using this â€Å"technology to replace transcription can lead to savings of over $10,000 a year. Thus, adopting voice recognition solutions can eliminate the need for in-house transcription staff, resulting in huge cost reduction† (para 3). The voice recognition technology has many functional uses; they â€Å"include transcription, patient monitoring, interactive response systems, telemedicine as well as electronic health record generation, maintenance and security† (Business Source, 2006 para 2). Though one must always be sure that patient privacy is protected, Wager, Lee, Glaser (2005) describes voice recognition, as a â€Å"method used in health care† which can best be used in â€Å"work environments where using a keyboard, mouse, or touch screen is not practical. † The newer systems are capable of understanding the speech of the user and how he or she applies the voice, through tone, pitch, and pattern; then this â€Å"is converted to computer-readable data† (Wager, et al. , 2005, p. 220). The voice recognition does not come totally without disadvantages. The disadvantage of these systems is the time it takes to train the computer to recognize the speech. This is a particular challenge in an area with many users. Higher-end systems are designed to understand any person’s speech, but most of these systems have fairly limited built-in vocabularies. Most would agree that speech recognition is still under development and its use is most likely in certain segments of health care, such as radiology, pathology, and emergency medicine. However, it does have the potential to be used with many other types of health care applications (Wager, et al. , 2005, p. 220). The use of voice recognition systems also requires the user to be aware of his or her surroundings. One must take precautions to restrict use to areas which are not accessible to the public, as the voice may carry and patient information may be heard by wandering ears. Depending on the information this could be harmful to the patient (information used may lead to identity theft if overheard) and violate confidentiality laws.

The Ipremier Dos Attack

The Ipremier Dos Attack Online websites and business face several security threats from hackers that are aiming to vandalize the website or steal information or at times notify the company about its internet security weaknesses. These threats include malicious code, bots and bot nets, phishing and DDoS or Distributed Denial of Service (Laudon K., Traver C., (2010)). Ipremier, an online business, faced one of these threats, the DDoS attack. iPremier is a successful online retailer of luxury, rare and vintage goods (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The DDos attack begins by the hacker distributing bots on several computers and making these computers botnets (Laudon K., Traver C., (2010)). A botnet is a computer that is controlled by a hacker to perform activates such as participating in a DDoS attack (Laudon K., Traver C., (2010)). The hacker uses these botnets or controlled computers to flood a server with unwanted requests which slows or shutdown the server operations (Laudon K., Traver C., (2010)). This can b e costly to an online business because the customers wont be able to access the website. It can also affect the firms reputation if the website doesnt work for long. However, these attacks can notify or clarify for a company its weakness points in its internet security and infrastructure. The CIO Bob Turley was in New York when an employee called to inform him that the website is not working and that they have been receiving numerous emails that say Ha (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The CIO called Joanne the technical operations team leader to discuss the current situation but she was still on her way to Qdata where the company servers are located and did not know what was going on (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). She suspected that the actions were caused by a hacker and that the sender of the e mail was unknown and hard to track (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). Unfortunately, their emergency plan was out dated and they couldnt remember where the document is placed (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). A suggestion was made to call the police or FBI but they were concerned about negative publicity (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). After a while the CIO called the CTO to take his opinion on the matter (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The CTO refused the idea of pulling the plug becau se information on the attack might be lost (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The CEO mentioned that the detailed logging was not enabled so the logs wont provide them with much information (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The legal counselor called as well to provide legal advice on the matter and told the CIO to pull the plug to protect credit card information (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). After Joanne arrived at Qdata she wasnt able to access the NOC for security reasons (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The CEO called a senior in Qdata and Joanne was allowed access to the NOC (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). He discovered that the attack is directed at their firewall and it is being directed from multiple IP addresses (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). She tried to shutdown traffic from the IP addresses but it didnt work because when one IP address shuts down another one operates and so on (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). The main concern was that customer information was not jeopardized or sto len (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). At 5:46 AM the attack stopped and Joanne suggested that they do a thorough audit to be sure that customer information has not been stolen and to know the points of weakness (Austin, R., (July 26, 2007)). During the attack it was obvious that the employees were shocked by the security threat. They did not know what to do, they never faced a security threat before and they do not have an emergency plan. The employees communicated through phone calls and no one knew what needs to be done or what was happening. Also, there wasnt a proper emergency communication with Qdata which led to banning the technical team leader from entering the NOC. The team reacted well to the situation despite that they did not have any structured plan to face the problem. They were trying to solve the problem through intuition and experience because there wasnt any plan. They tried hard and the top managers were awakened at the middle of the night to solve the crisis. However, when looking at the overall situation there hasnt been any systematic process in solving the problem and instead they relied on intuition and experience. If I was bob truly, the CIO, the first person I would have contacted is the CTO and I would have cancelled the meeting in New York and went to the company if possible. If it was not possible to find a flight, I would have instructed Leon to get the emergency plan and work on it. Although it is outdated, I would try to modify it as much as I can to match the current situation which can be useful. Also, I would stay in close contact with the CTO and Qdata to solve the problem faster. Some service providers do not respond to customers quickly and require the customer to call them over and over until they perform the request. In addition, after the attack is over I would have called for an emergency meeting to assess the current situation, the companys technological infrastructure, know what information have been or could have been jeopardized and discuss the modifications on the emergency plan. After the attack the company should be worried about the customer information and specially credit card and transaction information. Another thing is that the attack might have gone far and installed a bot on one of the servers. If this happens the servers might be used for another attack and the ipremier will be held responsible. Also, the infrastructure and security is not effective against threats so using Qdata as the website host must be changed. Moreover, I have to be sure that there hasnt been any leak because if the customers know that the website was hacked they may never deal with the company again. They may not understand that these things happen and security threats happen almost all the time, several people are not familiar with the term Cyber War. The company should create a backup customer and transaction database that is disconnected from the internet to prevent it from being attacked from the outside. It is an online business, so the customers and their transaction information should be well protected from any attack. I would recommend that not all the website and its information to be outsourced. The server, website design, and website related information can be outsourced but the customer and transaction information should be handled internally for more control. They have to find another host other than Qdata with more abilities and more technological advancement to handle their operations and protect them from further attacks. Also, I must have a full understanding of the situation so that if there is any leak to the press I can answer their questions and find a way to assure the customers that their data is safe. In conclusion, ipremier is an example for every online business. They did not expect that an attack may happen and were very confused when it actually happened. What online businesses should learn from ipremier is that an emergency plan is critical for any business. Also, they should know that there isnt one perfect security system that can protect them from all kinds of attacks. Who will be responsible for backup and to whom is the access limited? Where does the current architecture face problems in regards to data flow?
